It is the mission of the Ark Angel to spread the good news of Jesus both by providing Christian literature and being able to talk, listen and pray with people.
Christian books, music and resources
The Ark Angel has a wide selection of Christian literature, study books, biographies retelling the experiences of everyday lives, bible study notes, church and junior church resource materials, and a large range of CDs and DVDs. We also supply sheet music of all types, including music for graded exams which is helpful to local teachers and pupils with their music tuition. Through our trade suppliers, we always have a good range of special offers on display, including current popular titles, often bringing us into line with web prices – and with the advantage of allowing customers to browse before they buy. We are happy to post items to customers living out of the area who do not have a Christian bookshop near to them, and also to fulfil special orders.
We have a range of greetings cards, gifts and fair-trade goods. We buy stock from Traidcraft, Tear Fund and The Leprosy Mission in order to provide help, also, to those in other areas of the world.
Serving the community
In our rural area where there is little public transport and other Christian Centres are several miles away, The Ark Angel provides a place for you to browse, as well as a ‘listening ear’ if you need to talk and pray with someone in confidence.
We like to support local causes by donating a book or a bible. There are so many areas of outreach and one of our aims is to encourage the placement of Christian books and literature in schools.
Another service to the community is acting as ‘Box Office’ for local shows and concerts.
Support Ark Angel
The Ark Angel has become a household name in homes throughout the area. This unique venture has been guided through changes, both exciting and challenging, by the prayers of God’s people. Now celebrating 25 years of mission in Bude, we continue to look to God for His vision of the future.
We value your prayers and your support as a customer. We are a non-profit making organisation which means that all the money raised from sales goes into improving our selection of stock along with meeting our overheads and supporting local Christian initiatives. We are also supported financially by regular giving from individuals and churches. We hope that you enjoy shopping at the Ark Angel. If you feel able to support our ministry it will help us to maintain our service to you, which is what we enjoy and feel called to. Help us to look after the original ‘vision’ for Christian literature to be available to all throughout the Bude area.
The Charity is administered by five trustees, all with a vision to see the Gospel proclaimed in the heart of Bude. Regular giving or ‘one-off’ donations are greatly appreciated. For further details about giving please contact 01288 354993, or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
The Ark Angel story
IT ALL STARTED WHEN…………………..
Rev Dennis Burton became the Minister at Flexbury Park Methodist Church along with his wife Sally, and their three young children.
Soon after their arrival prayers began about a Christian Bookshop in Bude and two other couples joined them. Dennis had a ‘vision’ from God that showed him a 70’ narrow boat (in need of repair and refit), which would provide an ideal place for a Christian Bookshop on the Bude Canal. Later the ‘vision’ was shared on a larger scale, and when a visiting American choir sang at Flexbury half the proceeds were donated to “The Book Boat” as it came to be known.
A series of ‘providences’ eventually led us to Birmingham where we found the very boat, in the very place, the ‘vision’ had shown. At 6 p.m. on October 8th 1985, “Mountbatten Venturer” was welcomed to the wharfside at Bude Canal by a large crowd. The name “Ark Angel” was given to us by Rev. Dennis Burton’s son Matthew, (11 years old at the time), who said that the Ark was sent to save people from the floods and an Angel was a messenger from God. After several months of fitting out as a bookshop and Christian Centre, the Ark Angel opened in brilliant sunshine on May 26th 1986. From then on Dennis continued to pray as he saw God moving in a very special way. He was called home to the Lord on April 29th 2001 but our work at the Ark Angel continues to this day.
We traded on the boat for nine years until God provided our larger and more central premises in Lansdowne Mews, where we opened on 27 May 1995. Previously the whole of the Mews, under different management, was run as a “family entertainment centre” and the rest of the area we now occupy was full of arcade machines. Our Lord not only placed us in the town centre, but has also placed us in the shop which has the largest sales area in the Mews – what a triumph! Our premises were once home to gaming machines but have been transformed into a Christian haven.
