Foodbanks are operating across the UK to feed people in crisis. They provide three days worth of nutritionally balanced food, in exchange for a foodbank voucher, from its drop-in centres. They also offer a free hot drink, a listening ear, and additional support where needed to help break the cycle of poverty. The food is donated, sorted and given out by volunteers.

Many foodbanks are operated by The Trussell Trust, in partnership with local churches. Others are operated by church groups independently from the Trussell Trust, but all work with the same aim – to combat hidden hunger across the UK, providing short-term help for those who are struggling to feed their families. There are many reasons that people come to a foodbank – including redundancy, illness, benefit delay, domestic violence, debt, family breakdown and paying for the additional costs of heating during winter.

  • 13 million people in the UK live below the poverty line, including 3 million children.
  • Many struggle to put food on the table. Thousands simply go without.

2. Please remember:

  • All food needs to be non-perishable, so nothing fresh please!
  • Owing to safety and storage restrictions, food must be within its recommended sell by or best before date.
