Each year I choose a different translation for my daily Bible Reading. This year I am reading the Psalms in the Living Bible, and when I reached Psalm 9, I was struck by what seemed to me David’s “Good Habits”.
Here are the first two verses, “O Lord, I will praise you with all my heart, and tell everyone about the marvellous things You do. I will be glad, yes, filled with joy because of You. I will sing your praises, O Lord God above all gods”.
I see 4 Good Habits that David had built into his life. First, “I will praise You with all my heart”. That is where we begin, putting God first, giving Him priority in our hearts. This brought a Chris Bowater song to mind, “Jesus shall take the highest honour, Jesus shall take the highest praise, Let all earth join heaven in exalting the Name that is above all names…….”
Secondly, “I will tell everyone the marvellous things you do”. Giving testimony to God’s goodness in our own lives builds faith and gives us thankful hearts. When we hear of great things that are happening in other lives, let’s repeat those marvellous things too. It might mean a ‘share’ on FaceBook, or telling a friend on the phone.
Thirdly, “I will be glad, yes, filled with joy”. Joy and gladness are a choice, they do not spring from good circumstances, but come from God. Joy is part of the fruit of the Spirit and we need it every day. I love the verse in Isaiah 12:3 “Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation…” God has a rich supply of joy for all his children.
Fourthly, “I will sing Your praises, O Lord God above all Gods”. Many of you will have heard me speak about receiving “A Song in the Morning”. God has a unique song for you each day playing on Radio Heaven – listen and sing, it is life transforming.
So there you are – 4 Good Habits to build into your life!
