I started to talk to the man in the warm sea about the lovely weather – hoping for an opportunity to steer the conversation towards talking about Jesus! He was very nice, and as we chatted I noticed the strange small scars on his bald head. He came from the Hawaiian island of Kauai – he told me it was the wettest place on earth and that he and his wife were only passing through Antibes before flying back to the States. He’d suffered with headaches from the age of 16 and had endured 71 brain operations – another being due once he arrived home. He’d died four times on the operating table and I asked if he’d been to heaven? “Yes – it was wonderful – I didn’t want to come back! There were angels all around.” I was amazed at his courage and humour.
“I was a physicist with an IQ of 160,” he continued. God must have known I’d lose half of it – I don’t even know my own telephone number now!” He’d self-published a book about surviving brain surgery and was writing another about ‘starting again’. As he spoke I had a vision of his book like a small ship in a bottle and I sensed the lord saying: “Tell him his book is to be like a large galleon, setting sail around the world on the open sea. Challenge his island mentality – his thinking is too small and I want his book to be available not just to survivors of brain surgery but also for my children who have damaged their minds through drugs and alcohol.” So I challenged him with the words I’d been given, worried that I’d offend him by my boldness – but he was thrilled! “Cold shivers were running up and down my spine as you spoke,” he said. “I’m going to send the book to a publisher.” Then he repeated, “Don’t forget there are angels all around!”
I expressed my concern that his wife might think it odd that he was talking to a strange woman for so long. “Don’t worry,” he replied smiling, “she’s used to me talking to strangers.” When we came out of the sea, I met his beautiful wife – it was obvious what a treasure she was and I doubt that he could ever manage without her. She truly was an angel.
“Yes it’s true, there are angels all around and you’re one of them. When you long to reveal me as the centre of your life, I delight in giving you revelation and wisdom for others. If you will boldly speak out what I show you then you will be my messenger of hope wherever I direct your feet. When I highlight something special to you in a person – like the scars on this man’s head – keep your eyes on my face to discover ‘the need’ I want you to touch – to see what I want to perform in their lives.”
2 Timothy 1:6-7 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
2 Peter 1:21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
